The Memphis Zoo is excited to announce the opening of our newest exhibit Teton Trek in October 2009.  Because of the success of our last art contest welcoming Northwest Passage to the Zoo, we would like to invite you to participate in another contest.

Give your students a chance to be a part of a historic Memphis event:  the opening of the Memphis Zoo's newest exhibit, "Teton Trek."   1st place in each grade level will have the student’s art, name and school represented in outdoor advertising, provided by Clear Channel outdoor!

Winning artists will be publicly recognized at the opening ceremonies for Teton Trek (principals and artist’s family will also be invited).   The Zoo will display reproductions of winning artwork around the Zoo.

Guidelines:

1. Theme –  “Yellowstone: Preserving America’s Wilderness

2. Open to all K-12 students.

3. Students not enrolled in an art class can submit work but it must be through the student’s school.

4. Can use any media (crayons, markers, paint, etc.)

5. Size requirement for artwork is 8 ½ x 11.

6. Artwork must be oriented vertically (portrait).

7. We cannot accept entries that include other Memphis copyrighted businesses (ex.: Memphis Grizzlies, Elvis Presley, Peabody Ducks, etc.).

8. The Zoo will also be conducting a preliminary competition for students whose schools are not hosting an internal competition, or who are homeschooled.  These students may submit work directly to the Zoo (include on your entry label that it's a "self-submission" and the name of your school or "homeschool."

Submission:

1. Each school should have an internal contest to select one piece of artwork per grade level for submission.

2. Attach a 3 x 5 card with the standard label (see attached) to the back of the selected artwork in each grade level. It should be placed in the lower right corner.

3. Entries can be mailed in or dropped off at the Zoo reception desk

4. Deadline: Work is due at the Zoo by 6:00 pm on September 18, 2009.

Judging procedure:

1. Zoo Education staff and docents will complete the first round of judging which will narrow down the entries to the top 10 pieces per grade level.

2. Zoo staff will judge the second round and narrow down the entries to the top four pieces per grade level.

3. Celebrity guest judges will award places to the final four pieces from each grade level.

4. Teachers will be contacted on behalf of the winners.

Award Structure:

1. There will be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and honorable mention for each grade level.

2. First place work for each grade level will be turned into bus terminal posters placed throughout Memphis.  Work will also be turned into posters to be displayed within the Zoo.

3. First place winners will receive a certificate, plush animal, and his/her artwork mounted on a plaque.

4. Second, Third, and Honorable Mention winners will each receive certificate and plush animal.

The exhibit is a tribute to the greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and America’s National Parks.

Animal residents will include grizzly bears, gray wolves, trumpeter swans, elk, and sandhill cranes.

A Great Lodge will welcome guests at the exhibit entry.   The exhibit will open to members on October 2, 2009.

We are very pleased with a generous donation from Clear Channel Outdoor, which will allow us to turn our first place winners’ artwork into bus terminal posters to be placed throughout Memphis

First place winners, their teachers, and their parents will be invited to the grand opening ceremony of Teton Trek in October 2009 where winners will be publicly recognized.

We anticipate the artwork being displayed in the bus terminals in conjunction with the opening of the exhibit.  If the students would like their artwork back after the judging is complete, they may pick it up in the Education building at the Zoo during normal business hours.  We will hold all artwork until October 30, 2009.  After that date, we will dispose of all pieces.

We are very excited about the art contest and look forward to your participation.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Karen Strachan at (901) 333-6603, or by emailing her at kstrachan@memphiszoo.org
