By Northwest Passage keeper Emily Smith
In case you haven't already heard,
Cranbeary the polar bear moved back to the Denver Zoo last Thursday. Although
itwas a very sad day for us in Memphis, the move went very smoothly and we
are so thankful to everyone involved.
Two staff members from Denver, including
the Lead Zookeeper who took care of Cranbeary before...

Zoo staff is very sad to announce that we are saying goodbye to one of our beloved polar bears, Cranbeary, who will return to the Denver Zoo next Thursday. Cranbeary has been a Memphis Zoo resident since the opening of the Northwest Passage exhibit in early 2006. Cranbeary will leave April 1 to take her place as mate of the Denver Zoo’s male polar bear.
Her departure will leave a void in the hearts of visitors and keepers alike. “When Cranbeary came to the Memphis Zoo, her easy-going,...

The other morning I was napping in my nighthouse when I overheard someone down the hall mention a rather exciting word: "birthday." Raising my nose a bit and sniffing thoughtfully, I tried to remember the reason that anyone would be making such conversation. Whose birthday was it? Throughout the day, as I paddled through my pool and observed the daily crowds of people strolling by (clearly for my own amusement), I could never quite shake the question from my mind. All day I wondered, "am i...

We have had a great summer season for our three Polar bears! They really enjoyed their sixty-two degree chilled pool and had a Wet and Wild time playing together and swimming throughout the long, hot Summer.
We are now geared up for the nice days of Fall and Winter. The zoo's daily hours are changing, now it will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily for our Winter Schedule. Don't worry this change will not affect our Polar bear Chat which is still at 1:30 pm daily...

May 14, 2008 was a big day for polar bears. It was the day that they were added to the list of threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. It was determined that the loss of sea ice is and will continue to threaten polar bear habitat. Science has shown that greenhouse gases are indeed melting the sea ice that polar bears depend on to live, breed and hunt. While this is a victory for polar bears in the wild, it is a small one. There is so much that needs to be done in order...

Cranbeary the polar bear had a physical, too. The veterinary staff took an X-ray of the leg that she broke last February. It has healed beautifully! Looks like all those get well cards really did the trick.
Northwest Passage is getting a new neighbor! The Zoo has broken ground on a new exhibit. Teton Trek will be right next to Northwest Passage and will house grizzly bears and wolves, among other animals. So if you were wondering what all the machinery was doing, now you know!

The Bears' Christmas
Since the Zoo is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas day, we let our black bears and polar bears celebrate the holiday a little early. On Friday, December 21, we decorated a Christmas tree for the black bears. The tree was donated by a keeper who took her tree down early since she was going to be out of town for the holidays. It was not decorated with the usual ornaments; instead, fruit and vegetable ornaments hung from the branches. There was apple peel tensil,...
