JUNIOR ZOO CREW

Does your child love to be outside, surrounded by animals and nature? Does he or she dream of one day working in the great outdoors? If so, then our Jr. Zoo Crew is the right place for your kid! Come join us this year as we explore wild careers found outside of the zoo world. From ecologists to scatologists, we’ll take a look at some of the wildest careers around while experiencing behind-the-scenes tours, games, keeper chats, hands-on projects, and more. We’ll even meet some of our Zoo critters up close. Please plan to dress your child for the weather and for getting dirty, and don’t forget to bring a non-refrigerated, non-microwaveable lunch.

October 3: Wildlife Inspectors

This month, we’re partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to give you an unforgettable experience! We’ll learn how Wildlife Inspectors patrol the borders of our country, stopping poachers and smugglers from bringing illegal animal artifacts and unauthorized live animals into the United States. We’ll even learn how to recognize some of these illegal items, like elephant tusks and exotic fur coats, and test our identification skills with a fun “Inspector Game.”

November 7: Wildlife Rehabilitators

If you’ve ever wanted to care for an injured reptile, or nurse an orphaned baby mammal back to health, then this is your chance to learn how to do it. We’ll discuss how local Wildlife Rehabbers dedicate themselves to saving Tennessee’s native wildlife, and even meet some animals who’ve been rescued from injuries here in the Memphis area.

December 5: Scatologist

A ‘scatologist’ is someone who studies scat for a living, and, in case you didn’t know, ‘scat’ is a nice word used to describe animal waste! Believe it or not, there is a whole lot we can learn by studying an animal’s scat, including what type of animal it is, what it has eaten, and even where the animal has been. Join us this month as we get down and dirty with scat.
